What is dWoz?
dWoz started out simply as my collection of links to
important and essential resources that I use everyday in building and
promoting Websites. From there it grew and took on a life of it's own until it
ended up as "dWoz - serious webmaster resources".
Listings in dWoz are free, and I try to only list
sites/tools/resources that either I use myself, or have been recommended to me
by colleagues I respect, or that, in my opinion, offer useful and valuable
services to Webmasters in general.
Some listings may include affiliate links to those products
or services. These are included simply as a means to cover the costs of
hosting this directory, and in no way influence the position of the listings,
nor do they reflect any additional cost to you. If you happen to buy any
product or service via an affiliate link, you pay no more than you would
otherwise.
Also, there is no cost associated with listing and submitting sites.
What does ‘dWoz’
mean?
Around the same time
as I decided to put the directory up on the web for others to use, I was
also wondering what DMOZ actually meant. DMOZ is the domain name for the Open
Directory Project, and it turns out that DMOZ is short for Directory Mozilla.
What's Mozilla? Well that is a whole other story to do with Netscape and all
sorts of things.
Anyway, I looked up the domain name dWoz, it was available,
so I registered it and here we are.
Why Woz? Simple! My name is Warwick, which in Australian
Slang is shortened to Wozza and sometimes just Woz. So, Woz is my nickname.
Nothing to do with Mr Wozniak of Apple fame.
And so, dWoz is Directory of Woz!
How is dWoz different from other directories
or search engines?
Directories catalogue sites, or sections or sites,
or even individual pages of note, but do not index all the pages of those
sites. That is what Search engines do. So dWoz is a Directory, although it is
also searchable just like a Search Engine.
Also, I guess you could say this dWoz is one persons view
of the type of resources serious webmasters need for their day to day web mastering.
So the emphasis here is on quality and usefulness rather than listing
umpteen dozen free web tools just for the sake of filling webpages.
How can I add my site to the directory?
At the present time I am not accepting submissions to dWoz,
although that may change in the future. Please do not email me for inclusion
as that will only annoy me and may affect any future inclusion into the
directory. Get the Hint!?
How can I link to the dWoz?
I appreciate links from other web sites, and so I have put
together a variety of suggested links
and banners in the Linking
to the dWoz page. Thank you for helping dWoz with your links.
Does dWoz participate in Reciprocal Links?
A short note about reciprocal links. I generally do not
participate in tit-for-tat link exchanges just for the sake of a link. These
days with incoming links being considered important by the Search Engines
there seems to be a rash of activity with people requesting links just to
increase their link popularity and hence SERP position. However, I believe
that exchanging links on a one to one basis tends to negate this effect
somewhat. Rather, I believe in the "pass-it-on" principle, that is,
I link to certain sites because I believe them worthy of a link and of benefit
to the internet community in general. And, hopefully, other people, mostly those
who are not listed in dWoz, will link to dWoz for the very same reasons.
Therefore, any benefit to be obtained from these links from other people is passed from them,
through dWoz, and on to sites listed in the directory in a more natural flow,
which is as I believe it should be.
